1*) partie : the beginning of the trip!

Welcome to our blog on our trip to Strasbourg!

We left Oullins on November, 10th 2008 at 7 a.m . The trip to go to Strasbourg was very long (about 6 hours) and we were tired. We ate at 1 p.m in a rest area. On the bus, we were happy because it was good and fun and we could chat, play, watch films,....

2*) The European parliament:

At 3 p.m , we visited the Parliament with a guide who prensented us the different rooms.

About the Parliament:

The European Parliament is the only directly elected parliamentary institution of the European Union. With the Council of the European Union, it forms the bicameral legislative branch of the Union's institutions. The Parliament and Council form the highest legislative body within the Union.

The Parliament is composed of 785 MEPs (Members of the European Parliament), who serve the second largest democratic electorate in the world (after India) and the largest trans-national democratic electorate in the world (342 million eligible voters in 2004).

It has been directly elected every five years by universal suffrage since 1979. The meetings take place in Strasbourg once a month and there are some additional sessions in Brussels. Its secretariat is in Luxembourg.

The european Parliament:

The European Parliament is situated in Strasbourg. It's very important for us who are European citizens because it gives our opinions through the European deputies' votes. There are 785 deputies and they meet in the European Parliament one week every month, more particularly in a huge room called the “Hemicycle”. They discuss different problems on Europe, and they vote if they have to express their mind on a new law.

Next year, there will be 750 deputies because of the European Treaty. The biggest countries have a bigger representation whereas the smallest countries have to own at least 6 deputies. In the Hemicycle, they sit according to their political party. Seven parties are present in the Parliament, so it represents most of views.

To make these meetings easier, deputies meet first in Bruxelles Parliament. In view to the fact that they often go there, they can prepare what they are going to decide.

But they don't only talk about laws! They talk about Human Rights too, for example. Besides, they vote the European budget. This budget is spent in many fields such as agriculture, the environment, humanitarian help, employment, ...

So, the topics are varied, but they all have the same aim: making life easier in Europe and all over the World.

the european parliament:

The European parliament was built in 1958. It's quiet a new construction, so a modern building. The principal building is called Louise Weiss . It was built in 1992. The buildings are all made of glass,which symbolises democracy with its transparency. The central tower is an ellipse (like an oval). It is the symbol of the perfection. The top of this tower isn't finished like Europe and it will never be finished. The European flag is composed of 12 yellow stars on a blue background. 12 represents the perfect number.
In the Louise Weiss building, there are 17 steps and 1133 desk-rooms, 750 places semicircle , a special door with a red carpet for famous visitors. The lastest famous person who came was Sarkozy. The parliament can be compared to a mini city. We can find in the parliament : shops, hairdressers, a post office , restaurants, travelling agencies, banks,...
I think it's a very nice building. But a litlle too big for the number of people who work there .
