On Monday a 6 p.m we did some shopping. We saw the impressive Cathedral of Strasbourg. It is very big and powerful.
On November 11th, we visited the Struthoh concentration camp, situated near Strasbourg. It was raining and it was cold.
Himmler (one of the most powerful men in the Reich) decided on March 1941 to create a new work camp. It was built for 2000 persons but it contained up to 8000 people in 1944.
Natzweiler-Struthof was operational on May 21, 1941 until the beginning of September 1944 when the SS evacuated the camp to Dachau. The camp was liberated on November 23, 1944.
The total number of prisoners reached an estimated 52,000 originating from various countries such as Poland, the Soviet Union, the Netherlands, France, Germany and Norway.
The camp also holds a crematorium and a gas chamber, which was not used for mass extermination.
Nous avons le mardi 11 Novembre visité le camp de concentration du Struthof, situé près de Strasbourg. Il pleuvait et faisait froid.
Himmler (un des hommes les plus puissants du Reich) décide le 3 mars 1941 de créer près du camp d'internement de Schirmeck un "camp de travail". Prévu pour 2000 détenus, il en compta jusqu'à 8000 à l'automne 1944.
Le camp fut opérationnel du 21 mai 1941 jusqu'à son évacuation par les SS en septembre 1944. Il fut libéré par les Américains le 23 novembre 1944.
Le nombre total de prisonniers est estimé à 52 000, originaires de différents pays parmi la Pologne, l'Union soviétique, la France, les Pays-Bas, l'Allemagne et la Norvège. Le camp était principalement un camp de travail mais il contenait également une chambre à gaz et un four crématoire.
